STDs STD Basics

Genital herpes is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States.

Nationwide, at least 45 million people ages 12 and older, or one out of five adolescents and adults, have been infected with the genital herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). There are an estimated 1 million new cases a year. By contrast, there are about 1 million Americans living with HIV/AIDS, with an estimated 40,000 new cases of HIV/AIDS per year. The number of people infected with HSV-2 is believed to be greater than the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital warts and hepatitis B combined.
